Drug Unit Supervisors Course

Meet The Instructors

Length: 5 days

Designed For: This course is designated to meet the needs of a NEWLY ASSIGNED supervisor of a drug enforcement unit or task force. This is a PREPARATORY COURSE which will greatly assist the new supervisor (or those anticipating a drug unit supervisory role) develop leadership and management skills necessary to direct the activities of the unit. This course could be helpful for current supervisors with less than two years supervisory duty and no previous formal training. However, narcotics supervisory personnel functioning at the intermediate level of command experience, especially those who have not had the opportunity to attend a formal drug unit supervisor's course may benefit greatly form this period of instruction.

Prerequisites: None.

Certification: This course is POST certified in the states of Mississippi and Georgia and accepted for certification in other states.

Description: At the end of this period of instruction, participants will be able to achieve the following objectives in accordance with the information received during the instructional period:

. Participate in an interactive group forum designed to facilitate the exchange of drug law enforcement intelligence information, discussions of mutual problem areas, and identifying effective enforcement strategies.
. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the fundamentals of organization and management of a drug enforcement unit. This includes, but is not limited to, civil liability issues. Administration, personnel issues, accountability, case management, property control, and major case investigations.
. Analyze and assess the current strategy of national drug control.
. Develop and apply interpersonal communication skills, engage in descriptive writing exercises, and properly evaluate investigative report writing.
. Explain the basics of budgeting and federal/state grant management. Describe the processes of managing confidential funds.
. Identify the major aspects of supervisory responsibilities in narcotics field operations. List the supervisory "red flags" and field management pitfalls relative to undercover operations, handling informants, and physical surveillance activities.
. Explain, evaluate, and apply the management principles for drug unit supervisors discussed in class.
. List the key legal and case law updates pertaining to drug law enforcement. Identify the myths of the Fourth Amendment.
. Recall terms and definitions used in criminal justice vocabulary.
* This course requires one extended activity beyond normal working hours.
