Designed For: This course is designed for previously certified K-9 Handlers of explosive detector dog teams.

Prerequisites: K-9 teams MUST have prior explosive detector certification. Proof of prior certification must be provided with application for the application to be considered complete. Please fax the certification documents to 601-679-3082, Attention: Registration Specialist.

Certification : This course is POST certified in the states of Mississippi and Georgia and accepted for certification in other states.

Description: This course is designed for the enhancement of the teams' proficiency and to teach the handler safety concerns of the search. There will be a four hour block of instruction covering training of dogs and the dogs' capabilities; the handling and placement of training aide; search strategies, training record and distraction training. There will be an initial evaluation of teams' performance. The remainder of the week will involve hands on training with the dogs to include, but not limited to building and vehicle searches. There will also be training in regards to "booby traps". This course will offer a certification by the National Police Canine Association (NPCA).

Handlers and dogs will work in a wide variety of environments and scenarios to include vehicles, buildings, persons, etc. Fully secure, clean, industry standards kennels are located on the RCTA complex. Each handler is required to bring his animal's food, leather gear, and any personal training equipment needed.

Participants are required to bring the following items and proof of vaccination, which will be inspected prior to entry into the canine class:

Current Health Certificate     Current Rabies Vaccination
Bordatella Vaccination (not older than 6 months)     DA2PLP (not older than 1 year)
Corona Vaccination (not older than 1 year)     Appropriate collars, harnesses, leads, etc.
Dog food and water pans     Appropriate food supply
Shampoo     Portable water container

NOTE: Sleeping pads for canines are not provided. If handler desires canine to bed down on other than exposed concrete they may bring mats suitable for bedding. Any bedding should be of material that can easily be cleaned and disinfected.

Be advised your dog will be housed with eleven other dogs in an indoor air-conditioned kennel. No provision exists for keeping your dog in the barracks.

The National Police Canine Association (NPCA) will evaluate your dog's search capability and if successful will certify your dog prior to graduation. You must bring with you a check or money order in the amount of $55.00 payable to NPCA prior to certification. The fee represents $35.00 for membership in NPCA and $20.00 for certification testing.

The care of the dog and kennel during the course is the responsibility of the individual handler.
